Michael Greens asked:

A fish, weak-tight players, the maniac, the rock, and strong-aggressive players. Try to find a Texas Hold’em image description that conveys your style of play or opponents you’ve played with. But remember, just like the article, your opponents may use their table image to throw you off to make you believe they are something that they are not.

1. A Fish:

The weakest Texas Hold’em image and player there is. Also the most prevalent, fishes have poor hand selections and will call just about anything (also known as calling stations).

This person has very little skill or discipline, investing into too many hands, hoping for a lucky break. Chips are earned mainly from these players.

However, fish players enjoy the bluffing element of poker, so don’t be surprised if a fish tries to make a move with nothing or slow-playing by checking the best hand.

Basically, a fish is just a bad player. You can’t bluff a bad player. When a fish has some kind of hand and is still in the pot, it’s obvious he’s got something. Play straight forward - no tricks or fancy plays against these players.

2. Weak-Tight:

These players understand the fundamentals of winning at poker and have better hand selection, but with one exception - they’re afraid. They are quite passive and will often check or call rather than bet or raise. They fear losing a pot with an average hand and get bullied around with raises. This Texas Hold’em image may seem easy to bully around, but are capable of trapping you later on.

It’s better to lead with a bet if you’re acting before the weak-tight opponent rather than check. When you bet into a weak-tight player, their common reaction would be just calling or folding. If they fold, great, if they call, they’re probably holding a decent hand, but are afraid to bet or raise at the pot because they’re skeptical they might lose the pot. So making a strong play at the Turn would scare them away.

3. Maniac:

Also known as a loose aggressive Hold’em player, these players play as many hands as fishes but are inclined to raise and re-raise. It’s quite difficult to tell if they are bluffing or not. They are known to bully players around, but isolating these players by re-raising them off guard or having a decent hand will scare them away. Play tight against these opponents and trap these players to knock them out.

Play strong hands against these opponents (AK, AQ, KK, etc) or play a hand if you can see the flop for cheap, and if you hit a good hand on the flop, lead off with a bet. The maniac may try to play back and raise, but if you have a considerable hand, then don’t be shy to re-raise to make them second think their move.

4. The Rock:

Super tight Hold’em player who only plays premium hands. They play so few hands, that when they do limp in or call a bet, you’ll know exactly what they have (AA, AJ, KK, etc). Also known as the predictable player. So when a rock raises or calls your bet, you should have alarms flashing in your head that you’re up against a premium hand.

It’s best to stay out of the way when these players raise preflop. But knowing these players only hold big hands preflop, flops with no aces or face cards can be most profitable for you, knowing your rock opponent didn’t hit, unless they hold high pockets. Try to bet a substantial amount to take the pot down.

5. Strong-Aggressive:

These Hold’em players are at the top of the pyramid: Strategic and tactically sound players with the ability to adapt and change gears in every game. They have control over the tables and are much more eager to bet at the pot rather than call. They change pace at anytime, making them very unpredictable and feared by their opponents.

M.J. Morgan asked:

Machismo is defined by Wikipedia as “a prominently exhibited or excessive masculinity.” This expression is naturally associated with men, but as a dominant aspect of human culture, some women have adopted its traits. When playing poker, both women and men can suffer if they apply a prominently macho strategy, which is not advisable.

“Macho” poker stands on a basis of a few commandments, here described by author and player Alan Schoonmaker:

• “You must have enough confidence in your judgment to act decisively.

• You must take stands to prevent aggressive players from running over you.

• You must bet and raise to protect your hands and get the full value from them.

• You must have enough cockiness to create a strong image.”

However, some players have taken those poker principles too far, and instead of increasing their bankroll, they harm it. Shoonmaker lists some dangers of poker machismo that can leave players (both male and female) empty-handed.

Playing unaffordable games. A characteristic of machismo is having something to prove all the time. This ego-driven energy makes some players get involved in poker games they cannot afford financially or psychologically, which results in devastating loses and no learning experiences.

Attempting to beat more powerful opponents. An innate trait of machos is the fact that thy cannot accept the existence of players better than themselves. Machos try to prove they are always better than everybody else, which more than often results in humiliation when they have to empty their pockets to their “inferior” opponents.

Playing bad hands. Some macho players think they can just play any hand by bluffing and expect a good result, which is a fallacy, since good players only risk their funds when they have a large edge, not a large ego.

Overplaying bad hands. A macho way of kicking it up a notch is proving they are big gamblers when they have a bad hand, which sets them up as ideal victims for good players who notice and take advantage of this.

Getting personal about blinds and weak hands. Once a good player figures out the macho pattern and starts attacking, machos get offended and the personal drama starts, insulting others or complaining of unfair dealing.

Challenging players for heads-up matches. This is the most violent action you can propose in a poker game. What follows is a duel against a cooler-headed player which may include a display of fancy moves that will ultimately put the macho’s money in the hands of the other player.

Taking revenge. The thirst for making others suffer in a poker game usually blinds macho players to their own mistakes, leaving them broke more often than not.

Playing expert or big brother. Machos stimulate their ego with criticism or lectures to other players, but what they are really doing is scaring the fish away or educating them, both bad strategies.

Hiding their failures. A typical macho act is covering their messes to protect their ego; what they don’t understand is they are not letting themselves look at their mistakes and learning from them.

Schoonmaker has some recommendations for macho players who are now suffering from their actions and ready to make a change:

1- Show people what a wonder you are at places other than casinos, where it will not only cost you your dignity but also your money.

2- Catch your destructive ego-tripping by thinking about the reasons why you engage in any of the previously discussed behaviours: most of the time you will discover you have wrong reasons for acting a certain way and you can actually start changing your macho ways.

3- Focus on learning from others rather than on showing off or getting others to admire you; poker is about money, not people.

Machismo is definitely not the best path for anybody; it can only assure to maintain personal insecurities and ignorance in people’s relationship with gender as well as in their relationship with poker.

Timmor L. White asked:

In a previous article (“Yes, You Can Cheat at Online Poker”), I make the point that cheating is possible when playing poker. That being the case, you are faced with the decision whether or not to do it.

My answer to you is NO. I advise you to learn to play properly and to develop your skill so you can win fairly. Do not get caught up in cheating. To help you resist the temptation, here are five reasons why you should not cheat:

1) Cheating is not fair. Don’t scoff at this reason. There is great value in playing according to the rules. A sense of fairness is the essence upon which all order and justice proceeds. There are already plenty of injustices in our world. Why add to that total? The challenge of any game, whether it be poker or any other, is to win and beat your opponents within the framework of the established rules. That is the essence of meaningful competition. When you cheat, you break out of that framework, and you act in a way that is not within the bounds of what is acceptable. There is no challenge in cheating; you accomplish nothing of merit, since by not following the rules, you are not constrained by the same regulations that control others. For that reason, cheating is a travesty to everything that is decent and proper.

2) Cheating is morally wrong. Whether or not you believe in God, you surely have a sense of what is right and what is wrong. Ultimately, righteousness is its own reward. According to the laws of karma, what goes around comes around. By cheating, you are putting negative, destructive energy into the universe. Some day, your actions will come back to haunt you in one way or another. That does not sound like an appealing prospect, does it?

3) You are hurting others (and yourself). When you play poker, whether online or face-to-face, you are competing with real opponents. The people sitting across from you at a poker table are living, breathing individuals. Your table-mates are people with real families and real lives. When you compete with them in an unfair manner, you are directly harming them, even if they are unaware of your activities. Furthermore, you are harming yourself. This is not always obvious, but it is nonetheless certain. Self-esteem is a critical requirement for happiness. You must possess a measure of self-worth to attain any sense of purpose. When you cheat, you deprive yourself of your full measure of self-esteem. Even if you think this does not happen, it does.

4) Your poker skills will suffer. People who cheat at poker, no matter what they say or how strongly they say it, do not play the game of poker well. Cheaters never develop superior skill. When they are in a game, their mind is not thinking along the lines of skillful play. Cheaters filter everything they do, every situation they are in, through the prism of cheating. As a result, they never develop an ability to play the game well in honest competition. Simply put, if you have your sights on notoriety in the poker world, do not start down the path of cheating. You will be unable to cheat in high-profile tournaments and games with top professionals, and you will be like a fish out of water without your cheating ways. Many cheaters reason that they can start cheating to acquire a bankroll, and then once they get going, they can stop cheating and learn to play the game properly. Trust me on this point: that NEVER happens! Your best intentions aside, you are living in dreamland if you think you will do that.

5) You might get caught. There are really two separate categories of poker here: online and in-person. When playing online, there are specific ways of cheating that are virtually impossible to detect, so you may reasonably expect to remain unnoticed when using one of those methods. (To explore a specific way to cheat online, click here: Poker Cheat.) But playing poker in person is an entirely different matter. Cheaters can, and often do, get caught. In order to cheat effectively in person, you need to become really, really good at it. Pretty good is not good enough. Cheating in person requires literally years of dedication and practice. You cannot simply learn a method of cheating and then go out and execute it flawlessly and expect to not be discovered. Most people do not have the commitment and determination to become good enough at cheating in person to actually pull it off. Therefore, their odds of getting caught are high.

In short, cheating is a dangerous path to start down. Cheating is harmful to yourself and others, and the habitual practice of cheating typically ends badly. Here is a critical point: Even if you never get caught, cheating is still unwise! Cheating is never anything of which to be proud. These facts are reason enough to eschew any thoughts you may entertain of cheating. If you are smart, you will learn to play the wonderful game of poker within the framework of the rules. You will practice and improve your skill over time. You will build your bankroll, and you will achieve real success and a true sense of self-worth. And you will leave the cheating to those less informed than yourself.
